Nurse’s Notes for December 2009: Hand washing awareness

Cold and flu season is upon us already!  December 6-12 is National Hand washing Awareness week.  When is a good time to wash your hands?  Basically, anytime you think of washing them is best.

Here are some other ideas:

·        After arriving at your destination

·        After coughing or blowing your nose

·        Before making or eating food,

·        After playing with animals,

·        After using the toilet,

·        After playing or working outdoors,

·        Or before and after changing contact lenses.

Washing your hands is as easy as 1,2, 3.  First, lather with soap and rub hands vigorously for 20 seconds (about the length of time it takes to sing the alphabet song).  Second, rinse your hands thoroughly.   Third, dry with a clean towel.

During this season of illness, always cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue.  Some other tips to stay healthy this time of year include: avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth; avoid close contact with people who are sick if possible; get vaccinated with the flu and pneumonia vaccines.  If you do become ill, get extra rest as viral infections take about 10 to 14 days to resolve.  Drink lots of extra fluids, especially water.  Finally stay home when you are ill.  Keep washing your hands to stay healthy this winter!

The Parish Nursing program is sponsored by a grant from Southwest Initiative Foundation.
